About

Hello and welcome to Gourmet Grad Student! As the name implies, I am a Chemical Engineering graduate student in the bay area and I love to cook. My evenings are often a rush to figure out something to eat after a long day slaving away in lab, but I never sacrifice taste in my meals. I love complex flavor combinations, great local ingredients, and dishes bursting with flavor! Hopefully, you will be able to find some useful and entertaining advice here about cooking delicious, flavorful meals on a grad student budget and with a busy schedule in mind.

Besides enjoying making savory meals with friends and family, I am also the designated birthday cake baker for my PhD class, and have been given the challenge to never repeat a cake flavor for ~20 birthdays/year over 5 years! Therefore, you can count on seeing some interesting and diverse cake combos appear here, for anyone out there looking for a little something different. I’m starting this blog in my 3rd year of grad school having already made 37 cakes (yes I am counting!) some of which I hope to post about in the near future.

Just one word of caution that many of the things I post about I have only made once or twice – I am not a professional chef and I don’t always have the time to test everything fully before posting it. I also am a strong believer in spicing dishes until YOU are happy with them, something I can’t do from across the internet! Nevertheless, I will try to post as much detail as I can about how I make a a certain dish and give you my honest opinion of its outcome. And if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at gourmetgradstudent@gmail.com, I would love to hear from you!
